Erase, Replace, Embrace… A New Face?

April 13th, 2007 by Katie Green

End of a long week, and I read that researchers are proposing to erase the internet and start over?!?!   Wow.

The Internet May Eventually Be Scrapped

Associated Press writes:

A new network could run parallel with the current Internet and eventually replace it, or perhaps aspects of the research could go into a major overhaul of the existing architecture.

These clean-slate efforts are still in their early stages, though, and aren’t expected to bear fruit for another 10 or 15 years — assuming Congress comes through with funding.

I think we can all agree that we would be much happier without spammers and hackers, but the thought of the internet being ‘wiped clean’ and restructured just gives me an uneasy feeling.

 Anyone been following this?  Opinions?

Is Google going to pay for this? : )

I’m no network expert but scrapping the internet sounds drastic to me, though it does make a nicely dramatic headline. This reminds me of Science Friday’s feature on Is the Internet Collapsing? way back in 1996. Looking back, no one could have ever predicated the current and second wave of the internet that is driven by Web standards and massive user generated content.

That said, it would be interesting to witness how the democratizing and smart mob effects of the Web weaves itself into the works of the above mentioned institutes.

A couple of folks have gotten together to produce a min-series documentary about “The Next Web”

    http://2007.thenextweb.org/2007/05/28/the-next-web-documentary/

“Tim O’Reilly from O’Reilly Media, Steve Rubel from Edelman and Micropersuasion, Matt Mullenweg the founder of WordPress, Marten Mickos the CEO of MySQL, Eric A. Meyer, CSS and HTML guru and Jay Adelson, CTO and co-founder of Digg.com all give their opinion and share their insights on what the Next Web will look like.”
