Religious Observance Gains a Foothold in Second Life

May 22nd, 2007 by Brooke

NBC Nightly News did an interesting story last night on real-life churches, synagogues and mosques that are establishing a presence in Second Life.  The question now: Is virtual religion real religion?  Many people find the religious experience in Second Life to be gratifying and powerful; opponents argue there’s no substitute for real, face-to-face connections.

Yesterday, BWeek ran an article on religious-specific social networking sites like Jewster, Xianz, Christianster, and MyGodlyPlace.

Religion aside, I have a very large family and we are all slightly computer-savvy, so we have really enjoyed our own network on MyFamily.com. We stay in touch with photos, news, movie reviews, birthdays and anniversaries. Not for the family-faint-at-heart! :)

Really interesting story. Wondering if lesser-known religions will grow or if a whole “new” will form on Second Life? Or if there’ll be a Rev. Al Sharpton equivalent?
