Facebook started gaining popularity as soon as they opened up their APIs and started allowing other services to be part of their network. However I still think Facebook is too cumbersome. I still prefer LinkedIn. you may have heard that Plaxo is making some changes that will compete with Facebook and LinkedIn. The obvious problem is that we can not keep up with so many changes in all the various social networks. I believe that Facebook has the right idea with open APIs so that we can keep everything in one place, but it just needs to be less cumbersome and not so much of a time drain.

There are some answers to these problems being developed and it will be interesting to see what they look like once the dust settles a bit.
