I'm following a small group of people, some comic-artists and such, just to keep it small. I had a small stint where I started following a few more, but there was too much to keep track of everywhere, and instead of just cutting off Twitter inch by inch from overload I did some weeding. Your final point, edit edit and edit is truly the key. Twitter will probably remain really awesome if it remains manageable.
